Connect a test light or meter to the harness and look for battery voltage when the key is turned on. The two black wires each supply two of the glow plugs, and the relay compares the current in each path. This allows it to detect a bad plug and turn the MIL on when it sees an imbalance.

Advice from the forum was that a glow plug is likely failing. You can tell my measuring their resistance. They should be 1 or 2 ohms (take the electrical cap off - just pulls straight off - and use a multimeter to measure between the top of the plug and the engine block). Plug 3 read 169 ohms so there was the problem.

Copy and paste of a post I did some time ago on the glow plug relay. To do a quick test of your glow plug system locate the glow plug relay under the engine cover (plastic hood looking thing on top of the fuel filter, draw a line from center of filter to right headlight and the relay is about 6” from the filter housing under that line).
